Who is helping you?
I was starting high school at the age of 14. I was scared of starting a new period of education with new people, different schedules, and more responsibility. It was a new world to me with more opportunity in goal achieving. High School was not looking too good.
I was the kind of kid that had a problem with home assigned work. I would always wait till last minute and most of the time, not even get anything done. Procrastination would take effect from the assigned date to the actual last date due. The 90 minute block classes really seemed to be much knowing the average attention span of a kid my age was around 50 minutes or so.
I took the basic courses such as Algebra 1, U.S. History, Earth Science, and English 9. History and English were my strong points besides the struggles in Math and Science. I never have enjoyed school but maintained the idea that it’s a necessity.
I was exposed to the group of kids that smoked pot. I would hang out before class and get high and go through the day like that. It started to become the thing to do when you were bored or just hated school. I was influenced into skipping school, getting into fights, and drug use. It created the biggest downward incline in my life and seemed impossible to overcome. My mom started finding out I smoked and began to give up and seek other help for me such as medication. She thought everything could be controlled with medication. That only sent me downhill even more.
My grandparents knew how my situation with my family and school was going and wanted to seek help. My grandma was more of a mother to me than my mom was. My grandma always knew what was wrong even when I wouldn’t say anything. My mom would try to support me but her drunken habits always seemed to get in the way. My mother would always try to tell me my Grandparents were no good for me and were trying to brainwash me. I didn’t know who to believe at this time. I needed to get out of there. A new environment and support was needed for me to succeed.
Having spent 2 years at Rock Point School really helped me tremendously in my study skills most of all, enabling me to do well back in public school. Organizing assignments and limiting the procrastination in my school work was emerging surprisingly with my self confidence again.
My grandparents have always been my guardian angels since the day I was born. They would lecture me and just give constant advice whether I liked it or not. They were both school teachers and new a lot about what my position was and how to solve it. They love me and wanted me to continue elsewhere to prove myself and aquire more opportunities.
Having someone in your life to care for you this much is truly desirable for everyone when their young but not everyone has it. The support by family or loved ones is really mandatory in my opinion to grow up in the world and succeed. Without this kind of act in someone’s life it would be extremely hard to make it day by day and you would basically be left to fend for yourself. Having experiencing both half’s I’ve came to this conclusion.
